Have you ever wanted to experience an authentic African Safari? Now is your chance! Travel with us on the first ever Pickleball Safari for the opportunity to see the untamed wildlife of Kenya while playing pickleball on a new continent. Trip leader Daniel Moore, who lived in Nairobi for 2 years, and head instructor/multiple-time national champion Jen Lucore will not only provide unique insight into the culture, people, and lifestyle of Kenya, but also expert pickleball instruction along the way. Lake Naivasha and Masai Mara National Reserve are calling. Itinerary

DAY 1 – THU, JUNE 18TH   |   INTRODUCTION TO SAFARI PICKLEBALL TRIP

  • Please book your airfare to/from Jomo Kenyatta Int’l Airport (NBO)*
  • A taxi will be awaiting your arrival, transfer to Yaya Towers & Hotel
  • Free play at hotel tennis courts for those with an early arrival
  • Welcome dinner at local Nairobi restaurant

DAY 2 – FRI, JUNE 19TH   |   PICKLEBALL TRIPS CLINIC, ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE

  • Breakfast at Yaya Towers & Hotel
  • Morning pickleball clinic at hotel courts
  • Lunch at local Nairobi restaurant
  • Drive to elephant orphanage (~0:45 hrs)
  • Dinner at Ethiopian restaurant in Nairobi

DAY 3 – SAT, JUNE 20TH   |   PICKLEBALL TRIPS CLINIC, COFFEE FARM TOUR

  • Breakfast at hotel
  • Morning pickleball clinic at hotel courts
  • Lunch on your own
  • Drive to Kikuyu (0:45 hrs)
  • Coffee farm tour including roasting our own beans and coffee tasting

DAY 4 – SUN, JUNE 21ST   |    PICKLEBALL WITH KENYAN PICKLEBALL PLAYERS

  • Pickleball at JD Tennis Academy with Kenyan pickleball players, mini tournament and teaching new players

DAY 5 – MON, JUNE 22ND   |   SAFARI DAY 1, NAIVASHA

  • Breakfast at hotel
  • Depart for Naivasha Sopa Lodge (2:00 hrs)
  • Lunch at Naivasha Sopa Lodge
  • Afternoon boat cruise with potential hippo sightings
  • Safari walk on Crescent Island. View giraffe, zebra, antelope and wildebeest from up close
  • Dinner and stay at Naivasha Sopa Lodge

DAY 6 – TUE, JUNE 23RD   |   SAFARI DAY 2, NAIVASHA TO MASAI MARA

  • Drive to Masai Mara National Park (5:00 hrs)
  • Evening Safari in Masai Mara

Please keep in mind that this itinerary is subject to change and should not be considered final.

*You will likely have to depart North America the previous day in order to arrive in Nairobi on June 18th. If you are concerned about jet lag, we recommend arriving a day or two before the designated meeting date.

**If you prefer to fly back from Masai Mara National Reserve rather than drive, you can do so for an additional cost of $220 PP.

Weather

Expect warm days, cool mornings/evenings and cold nights during our stay. Although Kenya is on the equator, Nairobi is situated at 5,000 feet above se level and therefore the weather can be chilly during this time of year. Packing List

Attire & Equipment 

  • Clothing – Pack for 5 days of pickleball and 10 days total* (laundry at hotels will be available at a very high cost)
    • Waterproof pants and jacket for safari days
    • Sweater and long sleeve shirts for cool mornings and evenings in Nairobi
    • Semi-Dressy Clothes for 2 nicer dinners in Nairobi
  • Paddle – Don’t forget your weapon!
  • Shoes – At least one pair for pickleball and one pair of comfortable walking shoes
  • Water Bottle
  • Protection from the Sun – Hat, Sunscreen, Sunglasses, etc*.
  • Insect Repellent

*Kenya in June has warm days and cold nights so please pack accordingly

Other Items

  • Passport – Please make sure it doesn’t expire during our trip and that you have at least one blank page available for your Visa stamp
    • We also recommend bringing a photocopy of your passport in case the original is lost or stolen
  • $50 Cash for your Kenyan tourist visa (this is purchased upon arrival at the airport)
  • Credit Card – Many stores in Kenya will accept all major cc’s (although there may be an international transaction fee)
  • Cash – But in case they don’t we recommend bringing at least $300 per person for souvenirs, alcohol etc.
  • Important Documents – We recommend having a copy of your passport, travel insurance, and medical insurance policies
  • Power Converter – Kenyan sockets are the same as in the United Kingdom
  • Camera – Don’t forget your charger or extra batteries as well
  • Toiletries – Toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, nail clippers, and whatever else you need!
  • Medication – Please bring malaria medication and inform us beforehand if there is something we should know in regards to your medications

Safari

JUNE 22ND

Our group will be collected in 3 ‘pop-up’ Landcruisers in Nairobi and drive 2 hrs to Naivasha Sopa Lodge for lunch. We will then have an afternoon boat cruise on the lake to photograph pods of hippos, and many birds. Afterwards we will have the opportunity to do a ‘safari walk’ on Crescent Island where we can get up close and personal with giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, gazelle and other herbivores. Finally, we will return to Naivasha Sopa Lodge for dinner and spending the night.

JUNE 23RD ~ 25TH

After breakfast, we will drive 5 hrs to the world famous Maasai Mara for 3 nights at Mara Ashnil tented camp. Here we will go on a number of game drives to photograph lions, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, zebra, etc. In the afternoons, our group will return to camp to swim or relax.  Enjoy three meals a day at the camp, or have picnic lunches out on the savannah.

JUNE 26TH

After breakfast, we will drive 5 hrs back to Nairobi. Alternatively, you can opt to pay an additional US $220 to fly back 50 mins from the Mara to Nairobi.

  • 60 ~ 31 Days Prior to Arrival: 20% of the Total Costs
  • 30 ~ 4 Days Prior to Arrival: 50% of the Total Costs
  • 72 Hours or Less Prior to Arrival: 100% of the Total Costs
